U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to claim a ‘Big Victory' for the Republican party after it tightened its grip on the Senate in midterm elections, but remained silent on the Democratic takeover of the House.
"Received so many Congratulations from so many on our Big Victory last night, including from foreign nations (friends) that were waiting me out, and hoping, on Trade Deals. Now we can all get back to work and get things done!” Trump tweeted.
A divided Congress, with a Democratic House and a Republican Senate, raises the prospect of gridlock in Washington that will significantly curtail Trump’s legislative agenda.
In another tweet, Trump said candidates who lost their seats probably did so because they did not embrace his policies and principles.
“Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well. Those that did not, say goodbye!”
The president also criticized the news media, tweeting, “To any of the pundits or talking heads that do not give us proper credit for this great Midterm Election, just remember two words - FAKE NEWS!”
Trump also threatened that his administration will be forced to investigate Democrats for what he claims are "leaks of Classified Information, and much else at the Senate level" if the House committees probe his conduct.
"Two can play that game!" he said.
Trump is to hold a news conference at 11.30 AM ET (16.30 GMT).
