U.K. voters are heading to the ballot boxes on Dec. 12 after lawmakers backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposal to hold a snap election.

  • The government won by 438 to 20 votes. Labour, the main opposition party in the U.K., put forward a proposal to amend the election date to Dec. 9 from Dec. 12, but failed to win enough votes.

  • Johnson is hoping to secure a majority in the general election to break the current Brexit impasse. Earlier this week, the EU granted the U.K. a Brexit extension until Jan. 31.

  • GBP/USD was flat around 1.2864.
