India stocks higher at close of trade; Nifty 50 up 1.20%

India stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil&Gas, Metals and Consumer Durables sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 rose 1.20% to hit a new 3-months high, while the BSE Sensex 30 index added 1.04%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (NS:BRTI), which rose 8.36% or 25.80 points to trade at 333.80 at the close. Meanwhile, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NS:HPCL) added 5.44% or 13.60 points to end at 263.40 and Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (NS:BPCL) was up 5.35% or 19.65 points to 387.05 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were NTPC Ltd (NS:NTPC), which fell 1.68% or 2.55 points to trade at 151.40 at the close. Tech Mahindra Ltd (NS:TEML) declined 0.38% or 3.10 points to end at 807.15 and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (NS:ZEE) was down 0.34% or 1.55 points to 453.00.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which rose 8.08% to 333.70, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) which was up 3.90% to settle at 194.40 and Coal India Ltd (BO:COAL) which gained 3.80% to close at 243.40.

The worst performers were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (BO:TCS) which was down 0.41% to 2014.10 in late trade, HCL Technologies Ltd (BO:HCLT) which lost 0.39% to settle at 1004.50 and NTPC Ltd (BO:NTPC) which was down 0.23% to 152.00 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1176 to 438 and 60 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1693 rose and 876 declined, while 158 ended unchanged.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was down 0.30% to 14.8950 a new 1-month low.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.23% or 2.95 to $1296.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.93% or 0.52 to hit $56.59 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.88% or 0.58 to trade at $66.32 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.16% to 69.897, while EUR/INR fell 0.09% to 78.5875.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 97.292.
