Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.60%

Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, IT and Real Estate sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.60% to hit a new 52-week low.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 10.55% or 1.05 points to trade at 11.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Eldorado Gold Corp (TO:ELD) added 10.26% or 0.08 points to end at 0.86 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) was up 8.80% or 0.25 points to 3.09 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TO:TVE), which fell 10.41% or 0.230 points to trade at 1.980 at the close. Shopify Inc (TO:SHOP) declined 7.39% or 13.860 points to end at 173.800 and Cascades Inc . (TO:CAS) was down 7.20% or 0.88 points to 11.34.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 934 to 221 and 106 ended unchanged.

Shares in Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TO:TVE) fell to 5-year lows; falling 10.41% or 0.230 to 1.980.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.94% to 21.51 a new 6-months high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.69% or 8.55 to $1249.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 3.98% or 2.05 to hit $49.42 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.62% or 1.58 to trade at $58.70 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.23% to 0.7455, while CAD/EUR fell 0.58% to 0.6570.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 96.607.
