Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.18%

Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.18% to hit a new 1-month low.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Detour Gold Corporation (TSX:DGC), which rose 12.55% or 2.53 points to trade at 22.69 at the close. Meanwhile, Spin Master Corp (TSX:TOY) added 12.19% or 4.57 points to end at 42.07 and Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TSX:MFI) was up 12.12% or 3.75 points to 34.70 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM), which fell 21.37% or 1.37 points to trade at 5.04 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) declined 15.86% or 0.360 points to end at 1.910 and Tourmaline Oil Corp . (TSX:TOU) was down 12.01% or 2.09 points to 15.31.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 582 to 475 and 113 ended unchanged.

Shares in Detour Gold Corporation (TSX:DGC) rose to 52-week highs; up 12.55% or 2.53 to 22.69. Shares in Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX:MFI) rose to 52-week highs; up 12.12% or 3.75 to 34.70. Shares in Tourmaline Oil Corp. (TSX:TOU) fell to all time lows; losing 12.01% or 2.09 to 15.31.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.76% to 12.14 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.36% or 19.50 to $1457.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 6.93% or 4.06 to hit $54.52 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $61.08 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.01% to 0.7568, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6828.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 98.140.
